Cat6 vs Cat6A: Which Should You Install?

- Cat6A — full 10 Gigabit Ethernet to 100 meters; 500 MHz bandwidth; improved shielding (lower alien crosstalk).
Cat6A roughly doubles the usable bandwidth and removes the distance penalty for 10G.
How to decide
Choose Cat6A when:
- You’re doing new construction or a major remodel — the labor is the same; the cable is the cheaper part.
- You run PoE devices (cameras, access points, phones). Cat6A’s larger conductors run cooler under Power over Ethernet.
- You want infrastructure that will comfortably last 10+ years and support 10G to the desk.
Cat6 can be fine when:
- Runs are short and your endpoints are 1G for the foreseeable future.
- Budget is tight and you’re cabling a space you don’t expect to upgrade soon.
